February 27, 2008—DelCor’s Tobin Conley has become a course facilitator for ASAE & The Center for Association Leadership’s CenterU online classes. These classes which last on average for six weeks cover various topics in association leadership and are used for CAE (Certified Association Executive) credit.
At the moment Tobin is nearing completion of the Principles of Association Management course which he is co-facilitating with Sharon Kneebone. Over the six weeks of this self study course participants have been required to do a large amount of prep work on their own; including a weekly assignment, required reading from several books, as well as a minimum of two postings per week in the weekly discussion questions. Tobin quite modestly explains that he is merely a taskmaster and that these minimum two postings are often exceeded and really helps drive the learning along. He has said his role is really to “stir the pot” and keep the conversation going. After taking a peek at some of these questions in the class forum it is clear that participants have an intense intellectual dialogue going on between them, sharing ideas and learning from each other’s experience and questions.
Each week Tobin and Sharon will host an online meeting lasting for approximately 60 minutes. During this time the two facilitators will be connected on the phone and working together to respond to the flood of questions and comments which come up from the 12-15 people who are in the meeting. Each person’s question is responded to and the entire chat is saved so it can be a reference later in the course if there is a lingering question which may have already been answered. At certain intervals the course administrator will mail an individual progress report so that students can see how they are doing.
Although Tobin’s class is coming to an end, he will be facilitating another class starting in April. The information and registration information is below:
